Around The World Coffee
Flavours Of The World, In The Comfort Of Your Home
Created February 2007
When I think of fine imported goods, I think of a good box of cigars. A cigar box motif was decided on to package a collection of fine imported coffees from around the world. The hand-made wooden box is covered extensively in hand-rendered guilloche patterns and monetary-style motifs, including large multi layered text, hand made paper on the inside, even cigar bands around each of the separately packaged coffees.
Each country or region offering a coffee in the set is identified by it’s own unique pictogram logo, each taken from their own Coat of Arms or flag. The pictograms are displayed on an antique map of the world, illustrating and old world view of the globe, as well as on the coffee packet cigar-style bands. Each coffee flavour is described in detail with a large version of the pictogram on a supplement sheet. All this makes identifying each coffee easy and fun.
Typeface choices were the American Dollar typeface, as well as Slimbach, chosen for their old world appeal and legible classic lines. Colour comes from researched examples of cigar boxes, with their pale hues and textures. Coffees are packaged inside tightly, emulating the feeling of an antique cigar box.
Originally, all or most of the imagery and decoration used for the set was taken from stock imagery or from other open licence content, but it was decided soon after the first iteration that this would just not be unique enough. So, the entire package was redesigned using all original artwork, giving it the distinction it deserves.
