International Typography Conference
Your Secret Office Romance with Type
Created August 2007
In-house designers are stuffed into a world where they themselves are the only ones who truly love typography, they are the only ones who understand and appreciate the intricacies of typographic design. But this love is a secret love, a love that no one else could comprehend. With the 2007 International Typography Conference (ITC) poster, the ITC decided to speak to those designers in a personal way, to appeal to that secret love of typography.
The photo is of an office ‘pencil mug', common in any workplace, filled with objects that any designer would have, such as drawing pencils, a trimming knife, an eraser, fine tip pens, and colourful markers. Displayed on the mug is a love note sent by, presumably, a sexy typeface, asking to meet for some typesetting shenanigans in the copy room.
The poster itself is very large, at 34” x 22”, making it ideal for window displays and outdoor displays. The graphic headlines, and the negative space created by the minimal photography allures viewers into have a closer look, while the information typography is set cleanly in a modern type, making it easily read and understood.
Type used is Vista sans alternate. It is a modern typeface with flowing romantic shapes and curves, and a distinctive overall design suitable for both text copy as well as headlines.
