The Tesseract
The Madeleine L'engle Collection
Created December 2006
Madeleine L'engle's first series of science fiction books; A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind In The Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, and Many Waters; is a favourite among young adult readers, as well as young minded adults of all ages. This set packages all these books in an attractive collector's case, making them available to a new generation of readers and fortifying them prominently in modern science fiction writing. In addition to this series, A Ring of Endless Light was chosen as part of the set, as it works closely with characters from the original series, and further explains their lives and adventures.
Bright, whimsical colours were used in order to appeal to a younger market, as well as to give them a vintage feeling. The type was set in Trade Gothic, used for it's commanding, modern capital forms. The modern, cold, science-fiction-like text is contrasted with the vintage coloured graphics to balance the theme.
The illustration images were photographic, using ideas from each of the stories for their corresponding covers. Simplistic, somewhat abstract photos help allure the reader into reading. The entire set is boxed in a slim grey case, incorporating coloured bars along the front and back sides of the box, each bar corresponding to the certain colour of each book. As well as this, the same colours are placed inside the inside bottom of the box so that the books can be placed in the correct order of sequence.
The package is supplied with a point of purchase pamphlet, with a short synopsis of the stories, as well as a voucher for $10 off the buyer's purchase of the set when they buy another Madeleine L'Engle Novel. A poster was also created to compliment the book set, and to advertise a book signing and reading at a Vancouver book store chain.
